Scientists Use Light to Produce Biodegradable Plastic and Fuel

Researchers have developed a nanobio – hybrid organism that uses airborne nitrogen and carbon dioxide to generate plastics and fuel. This is the first step towards cheap carbon emission and production of sustainable chemicals.

Researchers from University of Colarado, Boulder have used light-powered quantum dots to fire enzymes in microbial cells. This eliminates carbon dioxide and helps generate fuel and plastics. Besides, these plastics and fuel such as gasoline, ammonia, and biofuels are biodegradable.

Prashant Nagpal, assistant professor at CU’s department of chemical and bio-engineering, says, this innovation is a testimonial for the biochemical process. He further adds that the research team is looking to improve carbon dioxide seizure to face climatic complexities and change the future of carbon-intensive plastic and fuel production.

According to the lead researcher and his team, they are exploring an array of potential that lies in nanoscopic quantum dots. These quantum dots are semi-conductors, similar to the ones available in television sets. Quantum dots can be put into cells to attain the enzymes that are capable of taking a specific command from specific wavelengths of light.

He further adds, that each cell is capable of producing millions of these cells. Further, they can produce two times more yields. Besides, injecting quantum dots into cells of microbial species converting carbon dioxide and nitrogen is possible without sunlight.

The results are promising and the team is exploring the synthetic applications. As a result, the future will see families and businesses direct the carbon emissions to nearby pond. This way microbes can convert the carbon dioxide into bioplastics, says Prof Nagpal.
