Psychology Education
Both science and applied psychology is on the rise in Turkey. Out of the 130 universities, 38 have a department of psychology and half of them are in private universities. All departments admit students on the basis of a nationwide university entrance examination (UEA). Tuition and fees are symbolically low in the state universities and private universities provide scholarship for about 20% of students depending on their rank in the UEA and/or their academic achievement. Only 1/3 of the departments offer post graduate education in different areas of psychology.
Although Turkish Psychological Association has prepared an informal accreditation system for the departments, currently there is no formal accreditation procedure for programs or courses. All departments have to follow the guidelines and regulations of the Council of Higher Education. Current regulations recognise students as psychologists after they complete a 4-year bachelor programme. Majority of the graduates work in health sector or in schools. About 60% of graduates work in areas related to psychology and about 25% seek a postgraduate training in Turkey or abroad.
