Psychology Education

There are currently 12 institutions in Ireland who offer undergraduate psychology degrees that are accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland, the professional body for the profession of psychology in Ireland. Of these institutions, 9 are in the university sector, 1 in the Institute of Technology and 2 are private colleges. School leavers apply to do a degree in psychology via the Central Applications Office and entry into courses of choice is dependent on the number of points the students receive in their Leaving Certificate Examination. University fees are free. Successful completion of an undergraduate degree in psychology approved by the PSI enables a student to become a graduate member of PSI. This is the first step in developing a career in psychology. Further education and training is subsequently required to work as a psychologist in such professional settings as clinical, counselling, organisational, health, educational, sport or academic settings.
