Psychology Education

In Germany, psychology can be studied at 44 universities. The admission to study psychology depends on students’ final school grades but institutions also have the possibility to select their students via tests or interviews. Since 2007, some German states introduced a tuition fee of 500 Euro per semester but most universities do not require such tuitions.

By now, almost all universities replaced the classic German diploma degree with the international bachelor’s (mostly 3 years) and master’s (mostly 2 years) degrees. Bachelor and master programs need to be approved of by accreditation agencies. Students who pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology receive a broad education in different psychological disciplines.

The bachelor’s degree qualifies students for a variety of different jobs but most students continue their study to receive a master’s degree. Master programs differ greatly between institutions and provide specialized education in one or more psychological disciplines.

The master’s degree in psychology is a prerequisite for more responsible and demanding occupations as psychologists in a great variety of fields. It also entitles students to access the education as psychotherapist as well as other advanced trainings.
