Can MobiKa Assist Elderly People In a Variety of Settings?

Recent advances in robotics have assured the development of robots that can easily assist humans in their homes as well as in healthcare settings. This time, to keep in mind the difficulties for elderly people, researchers came up with a unique idea of robot. The invention of ‘MobiKa’ by the Fraunhofer IPA’s researchers gained the maximum popularity on account of their outstanding ability to assist old people.

MobiKa – a low-cost mobile robot capable of two-modal interactions, especially with humans. These robots are particularly useful to guide elderly people; through interacting with them via text and voice. Moreover, MobiKa assists old people with their daily tasks, reminds them to take timely medicines and even administers basic treatments.

MobiKa Appears As a Supplement to Old People, Rather than as a Replacement to Humans

Florenz Graf, a research associate at Fraunhofer IPA says that the MobiKa is an example of transferring advanced technology into cost-effective platform. However, by shifting their goal to even more specialized platforms, the researchers developed more efficient and affordable robot. This robot was based on several new software technologies, for instance navigation tools. Graf further asserts that as a service robot for use in healthcare facilities, MobiKa is recently available as a prototype.

As a mobile robot, MobiKa can navigate autonomously in changing and dynamic environments. Moreover, this robot holds feature in identifying and approaching individual human being through using its person recognition software. However, MobiKa’s specialty lies in its functioning as a tool for the user, compared to other existing household robots.

Recently, researchers have tested MobiKa in a care home for old people with dementia. According to Graf, these tests have allowed the researchers to have a better picture of how MobiKa identifies area which needs an improvement.
